Shanghai Academy of Science and Technology (SAST), founded in November,1977 and composed of 31 research institutes with a staff totaling about 9,132, is a leading body of applied science and technology in Shanghai. It has 7 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering as well as 5842 engineers. SAST is authorized to grant doctorial and master degrees in 9 and l2 specialties respectively. 5 key laboratories and 11 technological testing centers sponsored by state ministries and provinces are set up in the academy and over 20 engineering qualifications are held by the academy. In addition, SAST is the publisher of 26 technical periodicals.

Its professional areas include the following: computer science and technology, naval architecture and marine engineering, electronic communications and automatic control technology, photonics and laser technology, material science, mechanical engineering and mechatronics, power and electric engineering, energy and environmental protection technology, biology and genetic eugenics as well as soft science research such as S&T management, consultation and policy study, etc.

In the course of enthusiastically participation in Key Projects sponsored by the state and Shanghai municipality, SAST has brought up an engineering team, and enhanced a comprehensive strength of techniques and economy. The increase of income by technology transfer and sale revenue averaged 14.6% annually in the last 5 years, totaling RMB 8.62 Billion yuan in 2006.
